According to wikipedia, A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.
I love to talk. You can ask anyone who has interviewed, taught, worked with or dated me. I can Armchair Quarterback with the best of them. Last night, I was at New Wave Coffee discussing music/creativity with my friend DJ Major Taylor when he sees someone he knows and envelopes her into our conversation. Then my friend KT shows up and the four of us end up talking Education, Gun laws, Comic Books and Racism for an hour.
It reminded me of what I love about coffee shops. The earnest exchange of ideas, engaging with people who have a different set of experiences, and the element of community. Too often I go to coffee shops to “get shit done” armed with headphones, a laptop, a book and barely make eye contact with anyone.
This tour, I’m challenging myself to hang out and engage with strangers in the spirit of salons. I’m challenging you to do the same. Why? Cause it’s good for you. I’m gonna try to update a little bit on here and if you have rad experiences tell me about it. Seriously Tweet, Facebook, Email, Courier Pigeon, whatever. I wanna know. Also if you have a coffee shop to recommend in your town lemme know!
